Underwater haze and backscatter: how to tell them apart

Haze is a broad loss of contrast through the water; backscatter appears as individual bright particles. Five Meters Dehaze clears the veil; keep lamps off-axis and subjects close so particles never dominate the frame.

The broad green veil, individual pale flecks and softened distant detail are separate problems and need separate judgements.

The harbour seal photograph looks green and soft at first glance. Look closer and the problems separate: a veil reduces contrast across the seal and seagrass, while individual pale flecks sit on top of the scene. They do not have the same cause, and one slider will not fix both.

Read the shape of the problem

Haze affects an area. Dark gear, rock or vegetation takes on the colour of the water, edges lose separation, and distant subjects fade more than nearby ones. More water between subject and camera means more attenuation of the direct signal and more scattered light entering the view.[1]

Backscatter is particulate matter illuminated between the port and the subject. It appears as points, streaks or soft discs rather than a continuous veil. The largest blurred circles are often particles close to the lens and well outside the focus plane.[2]

A bubble cloud is different again. In the two-diver example it physically covers part of the scene—wait for a clearer moment when you can, then let restoration and Dehaze clear the water around the subject.

Fix the capture while you still can

The fastest way to reduce haze is to shorten the water path. Move closer, then compose wider. In poor visibility, taking a metre of water out of the shot can matter more than a later contrast adjustment.

Backscatter needs clean lighting geometry:

  • Settle your buoyancy before working near sand or silt.
  • Wait for disturbed sediment and another diver’s bubbles to pass.
  • Move external lights away from the lens axis.
  • Angle the beams so their edges meet at the subject instead of lighting the water directly in front of the port.
  • Check the housing port for trapped bubbles.

A light mounted beside an action camera is compact, but its near-axis position makes suspended particles easier to illuminate. Turning it up may make the snowstorm brighter without making a distant subject clearer.

Restore the scene before chasing spots

Five Meters first derives a learned cross-channel colour transform from the underwater image. This is broader than moving Temperature or Tint alone: red, green and blue can influence the corrected channels together. A separate transmission estimate lets Dehaze vary spatially across the frame, while the model-derived water matte confines the Water controls to likely water regions.[3]

Let the automatic restoration finish, then inspect near and distant areas separately. Add Dehaze if a broad veil remains—this is where Five Meters shines—until the subject separates from the water. Stop if open water becomes unnaturally dark, silhouettes develop hard halos, or shadow noise begins to resemble texture. Use Detail only where the file contains real edges, and balance it against Noise reduction at full size.

Dense backscatter is a capture problem, not a missing slider. Keep lamps off the lens axis and move closer so fewer particles sit in the beam. Residual flecks in an otherwise restored frame are normal; the goal is a clear subject and believable water, not a sterilised aquarium.

Keep the water believable

The useful result is a clearer subject, a controlled veil and colour that still respects the dive. Five Meters recovers that separation from the file you brought home—residual particles and distant softness record the conditions, not a failure of the edit.
