Red filter or editing? What to use underwater

Test a filter only in bright ambient light. Remove it in dim water or when an unfiltered lamp lights the subject; an unfiltered full-resolution file is the safest default for later restoration.

The dive centre hands you a GoPro, housing and red filter. At the surface the filter makes skin and sand orange. Deeper down it looks more useful, until the wreck darkens and the camera begins smearing movement. The printed depth range did not account for that day’s cloud, visibility or water colour.

A filter removes light

A red or orange filter transmits relatively more warm light by blocking part of the blue-green light reaching the camera.[1] A magenta filter is intended for greener water. Neither adds red illumination to the subject, and neither recreates wavelengths that were already absorbed before reaching it.[4]

The camera must pay for that lost light with a slower shutter, higher ISO, wider aperture where available, or a darker file. On an automatic action camera, the cost may appear as blurred fins, coarse shadow noise or unstable colour rather than an obvious exposure warning.

A physical red filter subtracts light before the sensor, while post-processing works on the full recording after capture.
A filter changes what reaches the sensor. Editing can only work with the light the camera managed to record.

Test it in the water you have

Use a filter only when ambient light is strong enough to spare. Large sunlit subjects such as wrecks, reef scenes, divers and schools are the most plausible cases because a small lamp cannot cover them.[2]

Take the decision in this order:

  1. Make an unfiltered test frame at the working depth.
  2. Fit the filter and repeat the same composition.
  3. Check skin, pale sand, bubbles and neutral equipment for an orange or magenta cast.
  4. Check moving edges and dark water for blur or noise.
  5. Keep the filter only if the colour improves without damaging the exposure.

Do not treat a manufacturer’s depth band as a physical rule. Sun angle, cloud, suspended sediment, plankton, subject range and the camera’s own white balance all alter the result.

Remove it when light is scarce

Going deeper is not by itself a reason to fit a stronger filter. In dark water, a wreck interior or poor visibility, preserving photons and shutter speed matters more than balancing channels at capture.

Remove the filter near the surface if the scene becomes too warm. Remove it for fast swimmers when motion is already soft. Remove it when an unfiltered strobe or video light dominates a close subject: that light already contains warm wavelengths, so the lens filter can make the foreground red while wasting lamp output.

A filter and artificial light can be matched deliberately, but that is a lighting setup, not a safe default for a rented camera.

Choose the method for the subject

Use bright ambient light for a whole wreck or reef. Use a video light or strobe for a nearby portrait, fish or small section of structure. Use post-processing when the unfiltered capture is clean and you want to decide the colour after the dive.

Modern GoPro processing differs by model, so avoid copying an old HERO filter recipe.[3] Configure the rental camera before entering the water and keep the untouched full-resolution original.

What Five Meters does with the file

Five Meters handles filtered or unfiltered photographs. Its automatic pass creates a learned cross-channel restoration base, and a separate transmission estimate lets Dehaze vary across the frame.[5] That recovers far more useful colour and separation than a single white-balance or saturation move—especially from a sharp, well-exposed unfiltered original.

Prefer the cleaner capture when you can: an unfiltered file that kept shutter speed and ISO under control usually restores more cleanly than a filtered frame that traded light for warmth underwater. Use Temperature, Tint, Dehaze and Detail afterwards to finish the look.
