GoPro underwater photography tips that improve the file before editing

Set up the camera before the dive, use its wide view to get close, hold it steady, protect bright surface light and give the subject enough room to remain in focus.

A wide GoPro frame works best when the nearby seafloor and diver carry the composition while the wreck recedes through real water haze.

You reach a wreck, raise the rented GoPro and press the shutter while still finning. The camera records a wide view, but the diver is small, the corners are soft and the whole frame moves. None of those faults began with the colour cast.

A GoPro can make a strong underwater still when you use its wide lens as intended: close to a clear subject, held steadily, with useful light on the scene.[1]

Set it up before entering the water

Check the camera and housing depth ratings rather than assuming every GoPro is the same.[3] Inspect the seal, clean both sides of the port and fit an anti-fog insert if the housing and conditions require one.

Choose the full-resolution wide photo mode while your hands are dry. Avoid digital zoom or an in-camera crop. If the camera offers an interval or short burst mode, prepare it for moving animals or divers; several closely timed frames give you a better chance of a sharp body position without repeatedly jabbing the shutter.

Once submerged, check the outside of the port for a trapped bubble. One bubble over the lens can spoil every photograph on the dive.

Move close before taking the picture

The wide view is there so you can approach a turtle, diver or section of wreck and still include its surroundings.[2] Do not stand off and use digital zoom. It only enlarges a distant, water-softened part of the image.

Approach slowly, stop at a safe distance and let wildlife decide whether it remains. Never chase an animal, block its route or trade good buoyancy for a photograph. Very small subjects are also a poor match for a bare action camera: if they do not fill a useful part of the frame at the camera’s minimum focus distance, they need a macro accessory or a different camera.

Stop moving before the shutter

Use two hands or a small tray, keep your elbows in and finish the fin kick before composing. Let your body settle, press gently and hold the frame for another moment. In dim water an automatic camera may choose a slower shutter, so a small twist becomes visible blur.

For another diver, move slightly out of the bubble column and photograph between exhalations. Do not ask the diver to hold their breath.

Put useful light behind the camera

For straightforward ambient colour, keep the sun behind you or over one shoulder. Avoid pointing directly into the sun unless a silhouette or sunburst is the picture. Near the surface, watch white foam, fins and reflections: once they clip, no editor can restore their texture.

Build the frame with something close, a clear subject and a background that recedes. The GoPro shipwreck example uses sand in the foreground, a diver through the middle and wreckage fading into blue water. Keep faces and other important shapes away from the extreme corners, where the wide lens stretches them.

Keep artificial light close to the subject

A compact video light can illuminate a nearby diver or fish; it cannot light a whole wreck. Move the light off the lens axis and aim the edge of its beam at the subject. Turning up a lamp beside the camera often creates a central hotspot and brightens suspended particles instead.

Restore the best frame first

Choose the sharpest, cleanest original.
